Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian has said that Tamil Nadu along with several others oppose the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), aiming for its abolition or exclusion through local legislation. The move comes amid allegations of irregularities in the recent exam, currently under investigation by the CBI. He further said that the state does not require the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions. “Counselling for medical colleges will commence from August 21. We don’t need the NEET exam. We are actively working on it. The government is taking all steps against the NEET,” Subramanian told reporters.

Subramanian added that the opposition is not limited to Tamil Nadu alone. “Many other states have joined to oppose the NEET exam. Just yesterday, our minister, Durai Murugan, reiterated our stance against NEET,” he said. The DMK-led Tamil Nadu government vehemently opposes NEET and advocates for the abolition of the exam or the approval of Tamil Nadu’s NEET exemption Bill to exclude the state.
Controversy has surrounded this year’s NEET, with allegations of irregularities in its conduct. Over 23 lakh students appeared for the exam. The CBI is currently investigating complaints of rigging and has made arrests in the case.
