A 42-year-old senior doctor at Neuron Hospital in Nagpur allegedly died by suicide after administering an anaesthesia drug inside his cabin on Monday morning, sending shockwaves across the city’s medical community. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, though no suicide note has been recovered and the motive remains unclear.
Doctor Found Unresponsive Inside Locked Hospital Cabin
According to police, the doctor reported for duty at around 5 am and entered his cabin at Neuron Hospital in Dhantoli, locking the door from inside. Concern grew among hospital staff when he failed to respond to repeated calls and remained inside the room for several hours.
Hospital employees alerted the police, who arrived at the scene and forcibly opened the cabin around 11 am. The doctor was found unconscious and slumped in his chair. He was immediately shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where fellow doctors attempted to revive him, but he could not be saved.
Autopsy Points to Anaesthesia Drug Overdose
The post-mortem examination revealed that the doctor died due to an overdose of anaesthesia drugs. Medical experts also found injection marks on his wrist. However, there were no signs of external injuries, physical assault, or struggle on the body.
Doctors involved in the examination stated that the drug likely induced a deep sleep, which ultimately resulted in his death. The viscera has been preserved for further forensic analysis.
No Suicide Note Found, Mobile Phone Under Examination
Senior Police Inspector Sainath Ramod of Dhantoli Police Station said investigators did not recover any suicide note from the scene. Authorities are now attempting to access the doctor’s mobile phone, which remains locked.
Police officials stated that hospital staff described the doctor as calm and composed in recent days, with no visible signs of emotional distress or mental health concerns.
CCTV Footage Rules Out Foul Play
Investigators have ruled out foul play after reviewing CCTV footage from the hospital premises. The footage reportedly showed routine activity before the doctor locked himself inside the cabin.
A nurse was seen entering the room briefly and leaving after a conversation with the doctor. No suspicious movements or unauthorized entries were recorded afterward, strengthening the preliminary conclusion that the incident was a case of suicide.
Medical Fraternity Mourns Another Tragic Loss
The incident has deeply affected the medical fraternity in Nagpur, especially as it comes just six months after the death of Neuron Hospital’s director and noted neurosurgeon, who reportedly passed away following a heart attack.
Hospital sources described the deceased doctor as an efficient administrator and respected professional. Colleagues expressed shock over the incident, stating that he maintained cordial relationships and showed no indication of personal or professional difficulties.
Police Investigation Continues
Police have registered the case and are continuing their investigation. Officials are expected to question hospital staff and examine digital evidence to determine whether personal, family-related, or other factors contributed to the doctor’s death.
Authorities have stated that conclusions regarding the exact motive will only be drawn after the forensic analysis and investigation are completed.
