Sustainability in Healthcare Takes Centre Stage
Established in 2017, H.E.L.P. brings together hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, medical associations, research institutions and healthcare professionals to promote sustainable, eco-friendly and climate-resilient healthcare practices. The platform also serves as the India chapter of the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals initiative, linking Indian healthcare institutions with a global network focused on reducing the environmental footprint of the health sector.
The conference comes at a time when healthcare institutions are facing growing pressure to incorporate environmental responsibility into their operational models. Hospitals are among the most resource-intensive institutions, consuming significant amounts of energy and water while generating substantial waste and carbon emissions.
Focus on Climate-Resilient and Low-Carbon Healthcare Systems
Addressing the significance of the initiative, Dr. Alexander Thomas, Chair of H.E.L.P., said sustainability in healthcare is no longer an optional goal but a professional, ethical and public health necessity. He emphasised that hospitals and healthcare systems must lead efforts to reduce environmental impact while improving patient care, resilience and health equity.
Key discussions during the conference will focus on climate-resilient healthcare systems, carbon emission reduction, energy efficiency, sustainable water and wastewater management, green hospital design, environmentally responsible procurement practices, waste reduction strategies, regulatory frameworks and sustainability reporting.
Experts will also examine how healthcare organisations can implement measurable sustainability standards through accreditation systems, institutional policies and best-practice models.
AI, Telemedicine and ESG to Drive Future Healthcare Transformation
The conference will highlight the growing role of technology, artificial intelligence and telemedicine in advancing universal health coverage while supporting sustainable healthcare delivery. Discussions will also explore Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) frameworks, accountability in climate action, trust and transparency in healthcare operations and cross-sector collaboration for resilient health systems.
The day-long programme will feature keynote addresses, technical sessions, expert panel discussions, awards presentations and a valedictory session by Dr. Taslimarif Saiyed. The inaugural session will also witness the release of the H.E.L.P. Compendium on Best Practices for Hospitals and Healthcare Institutions and the H.E.L.P. Charter for Sustainable Healthcare.
Through focused deliberations on innovation, governance, accountability and collaboration, the H.E.L.P. Conference 2026 is expected to provide a roadmap for healthcare institutions seeking to integrate sustainability into everyday operations while strengthening resilience against future environmental and public health challenges.
