Nagpur: In a major crackdown, the Nagpur City Police Crime Branch has arrested seven members of an alleged criminal gang for honeytrapping and blackmailing a 62-year-old senior doctor, who is a Head of Department (HoD) at a reputed hospital in the city. The accused allegedly extorted Rs 1.78 lakh from the doctor by threatening to release obscene videos and falsely implicate him in a rape case.
Gang Used Women, Fake Police Threats
According to police officials, the honeytrap was meticulously planned and involved four women, including a woman journalist. The gang targeted the doctor in September when he travelled to Gondia to meet a friend. He was allegedly lured with the promise of sexual favours, during which the accused secretly recorded explicit photos and videos.
Impersonation and ATM Withdrawal
After recording the visuals, the gang allegedly posed as Gondia police personnel and threatened the doctor with arrest and public humiliation. In one instance, two accused reportedly forced him to withdraw Rs 1 lakh from an ATM. Even after the doctor returned to Nagpur, the harassment continued, with the gang coercing him to transfer money to multiple bank accounts.
Threats at Workplace, Rs 2 Crore Demand
Police said the harassment escalated when a woman’s brother allegedly created a ruckus at the hospital, while other gang members threatened to falsely implicate the doctor in a rape case. The accused initially demanded Rs 2 crore to suppress the explicit content but later agreed to “settle” the matter for Rs 60 lakh.
Police Lay Trap, Arrest Accused
Unable to bear the continuous pressure, the doctor approached the police on December 4, 2025, and lodged a complaint. Acting swiftly, the Crime Branch laid a trap and instructed the victim to hand over Rs 3 lakh as an initial payment at a hotel. When three accused arrived to collect the money and insisted on full payment of Rs 60 lakh, the police team moved in and arrested them.
More Arrests, Recoveries Made
Further interrogation led to the arrest of four more accused, taking the total number of arrests to seven. Police recovered Rs 1,500 in cash and mobile phones worth Rs 1.56 lakh from the accused. Six other suspects are still under investigation.
Case Registered Under BNS
A case has been registered at Tehsil Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 308(2) (extortion), Section 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), and Section 3(5) (joint criminal liability). Police said further investigation is underway to identify additional accomplices and trace financial transactions.
