Bongaigaon: A practising doctor from Bongaigaon has come under police investigation for allegedly using a medical registration number that does not belong to him, raising suspicions about his qualifications and authenticity of his medical degree.
The doctor, who holds an MD degree from Russia, has reportedly been treating patients for nearly 24 years at Dr Agarwala’s SM Hospital and at his private clinic in Jyoti Nagar.
Complaint Filed by Anti-Quackery Officer
The matter came to light on November 3, when Dr Abhijit Neog, Anti-Quackery and Vigilance Officer of the Assam Council of Medical Registration (ACMR), submitted a detailed report at the Bongaigaon Police Station.
Dr Neog revealed that the registration number 23577, which the accused doctor had been using, was actually issued to two different doctors:
- In 2002, the then Medical Council of India (now dissolved) allotted the number to an MBBS graduate from St Petersburg University, Russia, currently residing in Srinagar.
- In 2016, the same number was issued by the Assam Council of Medical Registration to another doctor.
Since the accused doctor’s name does not appear in either record, Dr Neog questioned the validity of his medical degree and requested legal action.
Doctor Absconding; Police Begin Probe
Following the complaint, Bongaigaon Police registered an FIR and launched an investigation. The accused doctor is currently absconding, and efforts are underway to trace him.
His family told Assam Tribune that he had spent several years in Russia and completed medical studies there, but they could not clarify how he came to possess the disputed registration number.
Related Crackdown on Illegal Medical Practice
Earlier, Medical Dialogues reported that five unqualified practitioners, including a BHMS doctor, were caught illegally practising allopathy in private clinics during surprise inspections by the Telangana Medical Council.
These individuals were prescribing antibiotics, painkillers and even steroid injections without an MBBS degree or a valid medical licence. They were operating clinics in the Amberpet and Saroornagar areas.
