Assam: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated development works worth around Rs 6,500 crore in Darrang, Assam, marking a significant milestone in the state’s growth journey. Addressing the gathering, he congratulated the people of Darrang and all citizens of Assam, calling it a historic day for the state’s development.
Spiritual and Cultural Reflections
PM Modi noted his visit to Assam following the success of Operation Sindoor, attributing the mission’s success to the blessings of Maa Kamakhya. He extended greetings on Janmashtami and highlighted Assam’s cultural heritage, historical pride, and its emerging role in India’s growth story.
Assam’s Rapid Development
The Prime Minister emphasized Assam’s transformation, noting that the state now grows at nearly 13%, a remarkable improvement from its earlier lagging status. He credited this progress to the combined efforts of the Union and State governments and the active participation of the people. He also lauded Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for consistent public support and historic electoral victories, including the recent panchayat polls.
Major Infrastructure Projects
The Prime Minister highlighted key projects inaugurated, including:
- Darrang Medical College & Hospital and associated nursing schools to strengthen medical education and healthcare delivery.
- Guwahati Ring Road Project, which will connect national and state highways, airports, railway stations, and inland water terminals, easing urban traffic congestion.
- Kuruwa–Narengi Bridge over the Brahmaputra, significantly reducing travel time between Guwahati and Darrang, improving transportation, and boosting economic activity.
Boosting Connectivity and Growth
PM Modi stressed the importance of rapid connectivity, both physical and digital, for regional development. Improvements in roads, rail, air infrastructure, 5G, and broadband have enhanced convenience, expanded tourism, created jobs, and facilitated business in Assam. He cited the construction of six major bridges over the Brahmaputra in a decade, compared to only three over the previous six decades.
Healthcare Expansion and Opportunities for Youth
Underlining progress in healthcare, the Prime Minister noted the doubling of medical colleges and seats in India over the past 11 years. In Assam, medical colleges will increase from six to 24 with the new Darrang Medical College. These expansions aim to improve access to healthcare and provide more opportunities for youth to pursue careers in medicine.
Economic Relief and GST Reforms
PM Modi announced next-generation GST reforms, reducing rates on cement, medicines, insurance premiums, and vehicles, benefiting households across Assam. He urged citizens to support Made in India products, contributing to economic growth.
Strengthening Security and Protecting Assam’s Identity
Addressing national security and local issues, PM Modi highlighted efforts to remove infiltrators and reclaim lands for agricultural development, particularly in Darrang. He announced a Demography Mission to prevent attempts to alter the demographic composition in border regions.

The Prime Minister reiterated the vision of making Assam and the North East a driving force for a developed India, emphasizing coordinated efforts to preserve heritage, accelerate development, and ensure national security.
