Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to revamp Odisha’s healthcare infrastructure, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed officials to fast-track the redevelopment of key government medical colleges and hospitals across the state. The directive came during a high-level review meeting held at Lok Seva Bhawan on Tuesday evening.
Among the major beneficiaries of the ambitious plan are SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCB MCH) in Cuttack and PGIMER and Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, both set to receive substantial financial allocations for a comprehensive upgrade.
The transformation of SCB MCH, a flagship project, will be undertaken at a cost of ₹4,474 crore. In its first phase, the institution’s bed capacity will increase to 3,796, with the broader goal of elevating it to AIIMS++ standards by June 2026.
Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar will undergo a sweeping redevelopment under a ₹5,958 crore plan, boosting its bed strength from 750 to 2,582. Similarly, the Acharya Harihar Postgraduate Institute of Cancer (AHPGIC) in Cuttack is set to receive ₹895.8 crore for its first phase, aiming to reach 1,127 beds after the second phase is completed.
Other major upgrades include:
- VIMSAR, Burla: ₹1,594 crore investment; bed capacity to rise from 1,485 to 2,861.
- MKCG Medical College, Berhampur: ₹1,014 crore allocation.
- Rourkela Government Hospital: ₹627 crore for infrastructure enhancement.
According to an official release from the Chief Minister’s Office, these projects will go beyond basic medical upgrades. Each campus will include modern healthcare infrastructure, academic blocks, staff housing, hostels, recreational spaces, and auditoriums.
“This holistic approach aims to create self-contained medical campuses that can deliver world-class healthcare while ensuring the best working and learning environments for doctors and students,” a senior Health and Family Welfare Department official said.
The massive infrastructure push underscores the state government’s commitment to transforming Odisha into a healthcare hub of eastern India.
