Ahmedabad: Dr. Devang Rana, associate professor and pharmacology expert at VS Hospital, has been suspended with immediate effect following the discovery of serious irregularities in clinical research activities.
An internal probe uncovered that the institutional ethics committee, which oversees clinical research, was not constituted in line with National Medical Commission (NMC) and Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) guidelines.
The irregularities occurred during the tenure of the former medical superintendent, who is now also facing disciplinary action. Based on a report submitted to the municipal commissioner, a high-level committee — including the dean of NHL Medical College, VS Hospital’s medical superintendent, and the AMC director of vigilance — was formed to further investigate.
The committee found non-compliance in research protocols and irregular financial transactions. In addition to Dr. Rana’s suspension, eight contractual doctors have also been relieved of their duties.
