Dr Som Nath Sethi Secures Podium Finish at New Delhi Marathon, Inspires with Unmatched Determination

In an inspiring display of endurance and determination, 74-year-old Dr Som Nath Sethi from Kurukshetra has successfully completed his 340th marathon, redefining the limits of age and physical fitness. Covering the full 42.2-kilometre distance once again, he proved that unwavering willpower can overcome any barrier.

Dr Sethi recently participated in the New Delhi Marathon held on February 22 in the national capital. Competing in the 70-plus age category, he secured third position after finishing the demanding full marathon, adding yet another feather to his already remarkable cap.

The marathon witnessed participation from over 30,000 runners representing more than 31 countries. Sponsored by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races, the event highlighted global athletic excellence, and Dr Sethi’s podium finish stood out as a moment of pride.

With this achievement, Dr Sethi’s total marathon tally has reached an extraordinary 340 races. His long-distance running journey reflects decades of discipline, perseverance, and a deep commitment to fitness.

What makes his story even more remarkable is the fact that he has suffered more than 20 fractures throughout his life. Despite these serious injuries, he continues to push boundaries and participate in competitive marathon events.

At one point, he underwent surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and remained bedridden for three months. Although doctors advised him to limit himself to normal walking during recovery, his determination and consistent effort enabled him to return to running sooner than expected.

Sharing his philosophy, Dr Sethi emphasised that discipline is the true key to success. He advocates for 7–9 hours of daily sleep, a vegetarian diet, and strict avoidance of junk food and alcohol as essential components of a healthy lifestyle.

He further believes that doctors should lead by example in promoting preventive healthcare. According to him, a disciplined routine, regular practice, and sustained commitment to fitness can prevent numerous diseases, proving that age is truly just a number when the mind remains strong.
