Highest Resignations from AIIMS New Delhi
Over the past three years (2022–2024), a total of 429 faculty members have resigned from various All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) across the country, Union Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav informed the Rajya Sabha. Of these, 52 resignations came from AIIMS New Delhi — the highest among all institutes. AIIMS Rishikesh followed with 38 resignations, while AIIMS Raipur and AIIMS Bilaspur saw 35 and 32 faculty members leave, respectively.

Widespread Faculty Turnover Across AIIMS
The minister provided an institute-wise breakdown, showing significant attrition across multiple locations: 27 resignations from AIIMS Bhopal, 30 from AIIMS Mangalagiri, 25 from AIIMS Jodhpur, and 22 each from AIIMS Kalyani and Bhatinda. AIIMS Guwahati (6) and Madurai (5) recorded the lowest resignation figures. No faculty resignations were reported from AIIMS Awantipora, Rewari, and Darbhanga.

Reasons Range from Personal to Professional
Responding to a question from MP Ramji Lal Suman on whether doctors were leaving for the private sector, Jadhav said the reasons for resignation were both personal and professional. He did not specify if any formal study had been conducted to examine the trend.

Vacancies Add to Staffing Concerns
The resignation data adds to the broader staffing challenges faced by AIIMS. Earlier, the minister revealed that out of 6,376 sanctioned faculty positions across all AIIMS, 2,561 (over 40%) remain vacant. Similarly, 19,529 out of 58,953 non-faculty posts are unfilled, leaving a 33% vacancy rate. This persistent shortage raises concerns over the quality of healthcare and medical education in these premier institutions.
