A 21-year-old woman lost her life following complications during childbirth at a private hospital in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district, raising serious concerns over alleged medical negligence and lack of proper facilities.

Incident Reported from Ambasamudram

The deceased, identified as Jannath Nisha from Pottal Pudur in Tenkasi district, reportedly went into labor on Wednesday night and was admitted to a private hospital in Ambasamudram. According to Health Department officials, doctors at the facility allegedly attempted a normal delivery using forceps despite complications.

During the procedure, she delivered a stillborn baby and suffered severe haemorrhage, which significantly worsened her condition.

Referred to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital

Following the complications, the hospital referred her to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, located around 40 kilometers away. Her family rushed her to the government hospital by ambulance, but she was declared “brought dead” upon arrival on Wednesday.

Probe Reveals Serious Lapses

A health department inquiry team led by Dr Latha, Joint Director of Health Services, and District Health Officer Dr Muralishankar conducted an inspection of the private hospital on Thursday.

Preliminary findings reportedly revealed that the hospital lacked essential infrastructure to handle complicated pregnancies. Officials noted the absence of a proper labor ward and stated that the facility was not authorized to conduct delivery procedures.

Authorities Take Action

Health officials have sealed the scan centre operating within the hospital and ordered an immediate halt to all delivery-related procedures at the facility. Further legal and administrative action against the hospital is currently under discussion.

Speaking to media, officials indicated that negligence during the delivery process may have contributed to the tragic outcome.

Rising Concerns Over Maternal Healthcare Safety

The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding unregulated private healthcare facilities performing high-risk procedures without adequate infrastructure or authorization. It also underscores the need for stricter enforcement of medical standards to ensure patient safety, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.

Related Developments in Maternal Care

In contrast, efforts are being made in other parts of the country to strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare. For instance, Odisha recently launched a dedicated mother-and-newborn care unit at a government medical college hospital to improve outcomes for high-risk pregnancies.
