Government Strengthens Focus on Integrative Healthcare, Wellness Promotion and Global Outreach of Traditional Indian Systems

Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav on Monday said that yoga and naturopathy are increasingly being recognised as effective complementary approaches for managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs), stress and mental health disorders, thereby supporting preventive and integrative healthcare systems.

The minister made these remarks while chairing the fourth meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Ayush. The meeting focused on “Yoga and Naturopathy in India” and reviewed various government initiatives aimed at strengthening preventive healthcare, wellness promotion and the global expansion of India’s traditional healthcare systems.

Welcoming the members of the committee, Jadhav described yoga and naturopathy as India’s timeless contributions to holistic and preventive healthcare. He stated that these systems are now becoming important pillars of the global wellness movement.

He further noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Ayush has been actively promoting yoga and naturopathy as effective approaches for preventive, promotive and lifestyle-based healthcare across the country.

International Day of Yoga Strengthened India’s Global Cultural Leadership

Referring to the United Nations General Assembly’s declaration of June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, Jadhav termed it a historic milestone for India’s cultural diplomacy and global leadership.

According to the minister, International Day of Yoga is now celebrated in more than 190 countries, connecting millions of people worldwide with yoga and creating greater awareness about holistic health and well-being.

He emphasised that yoga and naturopathy are gaining wider global acceptance as supportive healthcare approaches, especially in tackling lifestyle diseases, stress-related disorders and mental health conditions.

Over 70 BNYS Colleges and 5,000 Yoga Institutes Operational Across India

Highlighting the sector’s rapid expansion, the minister informed the committee that more than 70 Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (BNYS) colleges and over 5,000 yoga training institutes are currently functioning across the country.

He also stated that the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga has trained over six lakh yoga volunteers, while more than seven lakh yoga professionals and volunteers have received certification under the Yoga Certification Board framework.

Yoga and Naturopathy Contributing to India’s Wellness Economy

Reaffirming the government’s commitment towards traditional healthcare systems, Jadhav said yoga and naturopathy are contributing significantly to India’s wellness economy, employment generation, wellness tourism and global cultural outreach.

The meeting concluded with members of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee reiterating their support for further strengthening yoga and naturopathy as globally recognised systems for wellness and preventive healthcare.
