Kolkata: The West Bengal Medical Council has issued a show cause notice to former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh and asked him to respond within three days, failing which he will be suspended from the council’s membership, the council president said. The show cause notice to Ghosh was sent to his home. Sudipta Ray, the president of the council said “We have show caused Sandip Ghosh and asked him to respond within 72 hours. If he fails to respond or if his response is not satisfactory, we will suspend his registration temporarily till he is cleared of all charges.”
The state health department suspended Ghosh following his arrest by the CBI on corruption charges.
The department has also suspended Biswas and De recently, following mounting pressure to act against them. An official of the council said that Ghosh was show caused for “infamous conduct”.
“Many people have demanded that his registration is cancelled. We have show caused him for ‘infamous conduct’ or misconduct,” said the official. “If his reply is not satisfactory, his registration can be temporarily cancelled. It will be restored if he is cleared of all charges, but he will lose the registration permanently if he is convicted in any ongoing criminal case against him,” said the official.
Health department insiders said De and Biswas were close to Ghosh, who is in CBI custody in connection with alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Both De and Biswas were allegedly present in the seminar room on the third floor of the Emergency Building of RG Kar when the body of the junior doctor who was raped and murdered on August 9 was still there.
De and Biswas are accused of threatening students with delaying their registration, internship and of running a reign of terror across many medical colleges in the state.
