Kolkata, Jan. 10: The West Bengal Health Department has launched an investigation into the death of a pregnant woman at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital, allegedly caused by the administration of expired saline.

The department has instructed the hospital to replace the current saline stock with a fresh batch and has requested a detailed report from the medical college principal on the matter. An explanation for the presence of expired saline in the hospital’s inventory has also been sought.

Hospital authorities have formed a 10-member committee to investigate the incident.

The deceased, 21-year-old Mamoni Rui Das, gave birth on Wednesday but her condition worsened the next day. Despite being moved to the ICU, she passed away on Friday.

Additionally, seven other pregnant women reportedly became critically ill after receiving the same saline. They have been transferred to the ICU for further treatment.

Relatives of the victims have filed a formal police complaint, seeking accountability for the alleged negligence. The inquiry aims to address the lapses and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
