Visakhapatnam: Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) has become the first government hospital in Andhra Pradesh to receive approval for performing liver transplants, announced Dr. K Rambabu, the hospital’s director.
In a media briefing on Tuesday, Dr. Rambabu highlighted that VIMS had performed several rare surgeries in 2024, including cochlear implants for both ears on a single patient, complex neuro-spinal surgeries, and removal of abdominal tumors, all carried out free of charge.
Dr. Rambabu further mentioned that while private and corporate hospitals charge between Rs 3,000 and Rs 30,000 for procedures like endoscopies, colonoscopies, and endo-ultrasonography, VIMS provides these services at no cost. In the past six months alone, the hospital has conducted over 1,050 endoscopies. Additionally, VIMS offers platelet-rich plasma treatments for joint pain relief free of charge and performs neuro-surgical treatments using endoscopic techniques not available in any other government hospital in the state.
The Union government has also approved the establishment of a secondary-level chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) medical management center at VIMS. A 1.8-acre area within the hospital has been allocated for this center, and the construction of a three-story building will begin soon.
