VIJAYAWADA — The city police have registered a criminal case against a local medical doctor following a comprehensive complaint filed by a 28-year-old staff nurse. The accused faces severe legal charges, including rape, cheating, criminal intimidation, and caste-based discrimination. The incident has sparked immense concern regarding the safety and vulnerability of healthcare workers within professional and personal dynamics.
According to the official police statement, the victim and the accused first met in 2018 while working together at a prominent private healthcare facility in the city. During their professional interactions, the doctor reportedly expressed romantic interest in the woman. He allegedly represented himself as single and unmarried, proactively proposing marriage despite explicitly acknowledging his full awareness of her specific socio-caste background.
The complainant detailed a timeline of escalating exploitation starting in 2022. Based on consistent promises of a legal marriage, a physical relationship was established. Over the next two years, the victim alleges that she was subjected to continuous sexual exploitation under false pretexts. During this timeframe, she reportedly became pregnant twice. The victim stated in her official report that the doctor directly coerced her into terminating both pregnancies by administering medical abortion tablets against her genuine wishes.
The relationship progressed further when the duo began cohabiting in a rented residence in Vijayawada. On April 2, 2024, the doctor allegedly conducted a secret marriage ceremony with the complainant. Police reports indicate that he strictly instructed her to keep the marriage entirely confidential and hide it from colleagues, friends, and relatives.
The situation unraveled when the victim discovered that the doctor was already legally married and had a daughter from his first marriage. The complainant, who is currently three months pregnant, confronted the doctor regarding the hidden marriage and the deception. Upon being questioned, the accused allegedly turned hostile, launching verbal assaults and directing severe caste-related slurs and derogatory remarks at her.
Furthermore, the victim expanded her complaint to include the doctor’s immediate family members. She alleged that when she reached out to the doctor’s mother and first wife to inform them about the secret marriage and ongoing relationship, they subjected her to intense criminal intimidation. According to the complaint, both women threatened her with dire consequences and utilized deeply offensive, caste-based slurs to humiliate her.
Acting swiftly on the formal written complaint, the city police registered a detailed first information report (FIR). The case has been booked under the relevant stringent provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rape, cheating, and criminal intimidation. Additionally, given the explicit nature of the verbal assaults mentioned, the police applied sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
A senior police official supervising the matter stated that a multi-angled investigation is currently underway. Authorities are gathering corroborative medical reports, recording formal statements, and verifying the digital and physical evidence related to the hidden marriage and cohabitation. Legal experts note that the accumulation of charges under both the new penal codes and specialized social protection laws underscores the gravity of the offenses being investigated. Further updates from the local police department are awaited as testimonies from witnesses and the accused are processed.
