Vice Admiral Manish Honwad Takes Charge As Director And Commandant Of AFMC Pune

Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad, VSM, has assumed charge as the Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune. He brings over 37 years of experience across academic, clinical and administrative roles in the Armed Forces Medical Services.

Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad, VSM, assumed charge as Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, on Tuesday morning.

Vice Admiral Manish Honwad completed his MBBS from the Armed Forces Medical College in 1989 and subsequently pursued an MD in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine from AFMC, completing it in 1998.

He is a World Health Organization (WHO) Fellow in Neuro-Anesthesiology from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru. He is also an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi, where he was awarded an M.Phil in Public Administration.

Over 37 Years Of Service In Armed Forces Medical Services

During a distinguished career spanning more than 37 years, Vice Admiral Manish Honwad has held several important academic, clinical and administrative appointments.

His previous assignments include Additional Director General Medical Services (Navy) at Naval Headquarters, Commanding Officer of INHS Sanjivani and Commanding Officer of INHS Asvini.

He has now taken over as Director and Commandant of AFMC, Pune.

Healthcare Simulation And Academic Expertise

Vice Admiral Honwad is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSIH), USA.

He has also served as an international speaker on healthcare simulation at various national and international conferences, contributing to the academic and professional development of healthcare personnel.

Conferred Vishisht Seva Medal In 2025

In recognition of his service and dedication to patient care, Vice Admiral Manish Honwad was conferred the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in 2025.

He has also received Chief of Naval Staff Commendations on multiple occasions, including in 2006 and 2013. In addition, he was awarded the FOC-in-C (South) Commendation in 2007 and the FOC-in-C (West) Commendation in 2011.

The Directorate General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), on behalf of all ranks of the Armed Forces Medical Services, conveyed its best wishes to Vice Admiral Honwad for a successful tenure as Director and Commandant of AFMC, Pune.

AFMC Expands Specialist Services In Pune Cantonment Hospital

The appointment comes against the backdrop of AFMC’s continued contribution to specialist healthcare services in Pune.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Pune Cantonment General Hospital has expanded its surgical services following the deployment of specialist doctors by AFMC.

AFMC has deployed a General Surgeon and a Gynaecologist, along with other specialists, improving access to critical procedures at the hospital over the past few months.
