UMC : Eight doctors held negligent in Dehradun

Dehradun : Uttarakhand Medical Council (UMC) has held eight doctors attached to Max Hospital guilty of medical negligence and have directed them to undergo 100 hours of “continued medical education” before renewal of their medical license. The action of the UMC comes following a complaint filed by Vikas Mehta in which he alleged that his elderly father died due to the medical negligence of the doctors of Max Hospital. Mehta alleged that his father underwent a back surgery for back pain and following the surgery his oxygen level started dropping which was caused by advanced lung diseases which his father was suffering. Mehta further alleged that the pre-operative X-Ray had clearly diagnosed the issue but since the facts were not disclosed to the operating team, no corrective measures were taken by the operating team which lead to the death of his father. The council after going through the complaint concluded that the doctors were negligent and under section 21(2)(a) of the Uttarakhand Medical Council Act, 2002, warned the doctors not to repeat such negligence in future. The council further said that the litigant was free to seek justice against the Chief Operating Office (COO) and Managing Director of Max Health Hospital in a competent court as they were also vicarious liable for the acts of the doctors.
