Mohali – Tensions erupted at Indus International Hospital in Dera Bassi on 13 April 2026, following the death of a 36-year-old patient identified as Deepak Kumar. His family staged a protest and created a ruckus at the facility, alleging gross medical negligence and financial exploitation.

The Incident and Allegations

Deepak, a resident of GBB Rose Wood in Dera Bassi who worked as a spare parts supplier, reportedly drove himself to the hospital on 4 April after experiencing mild pain.

  • Surgery Complications: Doctors informed him of a valve-related heart issue, and he underwent surgery on 6 April.
  • Brain Clot: Following the heart procedure, a clot developed in his brain. The family alleges a subsequent brain surgery was performed without their proper informed consent.
  • Extortion Claims: The grieving kin, including his wife, brother, and father, accused the hospital of keeping the patient on a ventilator artificially after his death to extract lakhs of rupees in medical bills.
  • Direct Accountability: The family has specifically held Dr. Rajesh Kumar and Dr. Naresh Bansal  responsible for the alleged lapses.

Hospital Defense

The hospital management has refuted all allegations as “baseless”.

  • Consent and Protocol

Dr. Vineesh Narula, GM Operations, stated that the heart surgery was performed with family consent and that complications, including the brain clot discovered via CT scan, were communicated and treated according to standard medical procedure.

  • Best Efforts: The management maintained that every possible effort was made to save the patient’s life.

Official Investigation

The police reached the hospital to defuse the situation and have taken custody of the body for a post-mortem.

  • Medical Board: Dera Bassi SHO Inspector Sumit Mor confirmed receiving a formal complaint from the family.
  • Next Steps: The Civil Surgeon of Mohali has been directed to constitute a panel of medical experts to investigate the case. Further legal action will be determined by the findings of this medical board’s report.

This is notably the second time the hospital has faced such controversies; it was previously accused of financial irregularities related to kidney replacement procedures in April 2023.
