Doctor Accused of Illegal Transplantation at Alakananda Hospital
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday granted regular bail to Dr. Perumalla Rajashekar, a doctor at Savita Medical College, who was accused of illegally performing kidney transplants at Alakananda Hospital, Saroornagar, without prior approval from authorities.
Justice J. Sreenivas Rao heard the bail application, which stemmed from allegations that the transplant surgeries were conducted without legal permission.
Illegal Kidney Transplants & Financial Deals
According to the complaint, Alakananda Hospital had been operational for only seven months when the alleged illegal transplants took place. Two women from Tamil Nadu, facing financial difficulties, had agreed to donate their kidneys in exchange for ₹55 lakh each from two Karnataka-based recipients in need of transplants.
The surgery, authorized by Dr. Sumanth from the hospital, was reportedly performed on January 17, 2025, without informing the relevant authorities.
Arguments in Court
The petitioner’s counsel argued that Dr. Rajashekar was falsely implicated and had been in judicial custody since January 27, 2025. He further pointed out that other accused individuals, facing more serious allegations, had already been granted bail.
However, the Public Prosecutor opposed the bail, arguing that the petitioner had conspired with other doctors to carry out the illegal surgery despite knowing it was a criminal offense.
Conditional Bail Granted
After reviewing the case, the judge granted conditional bail, imposing the following restrictions:
- Execution of a ₹25,000 bail bond with two sureties.
- Mandatory appearance before the concerned police station on the 5th of every month for three months or until the chargesheet is filed.
The court noted that most of the investigation had already been completed, and releasing the petitioner would not affect the case proceedings.
