Srinagar: The mysterious deaths of 17 individuals, including 14 children, in the Badhaal village of Rajouri district, have raised suspicions of organophosphorus poisoning, officials said on Monday. The district administration has implemented strict containment measures, while initial medical interventions with atropine, an antidote for organophosphorus poisoning, have shown encouraging results.

Medical Insight and Progress:

A senior doctor treating the affected patients stated that atropine injections were administered based on initial observations and yielded positive results. Atropine is widely used to counteract poisoning caused by organophosphorus nerve agents and insecticides.

The doctor added, “We used atropine as a part of a hit-and-trial method, and it worked well. Two patients treated with atropine for other purposes, like increasing the heart rate, responded positively and are now recovering.”

While the medical response has shown promise, the doctor emphasized that it is premature to definitively conclude organophosphorus poisoning as the cause of deaths until official lab reports are available.

Containment Measures:

In response to the deaths and the rising number of cases, the Rajouri district administration has declared the Badhaal area a containment zone. Strict measures have been enforced to control the situation:

  • Containment Zones:
    • Zone 1: Families where deaths have occurred will have their houses sealed. Entry is strictly prohibited unless authorized by designated officials.
    • Zone 2: Families identified as close contacts of the affected will be relocated to GMC Rajouri for continuous health monitoring.
  • Monitoring and Accountability:
    • All meals provided to families in containment zones will be monitored by designated officials, with police personnel deployed to oversee food distribution.
    • A logbook will document food distribution and consumption, updated three times daily and signed by monitoring officers.
  • Restrictions:
    • Public and private gatherings are strictly prohibited within containment zones to curb the spread of the suspected toxin.

Background and Current Status:

The wave of deaths in Badhaal has been ongoing for the past two months, causing widespread concern. The district administration has ramped up efforts to trace the source of the suspected toxin while providing treatment to hospitalized individuals. The containment measures aim to prevent further casualties while investigations continue.

Officials have yet to receive a definitive report from top laboratories, and the exact cause of the poisoning remains under investigation. The containment strategy, combined with close monitoring and ongoing medical interventions, is expected to help manage the crisis in the affected region.
