Hospital recovering after April 14 fire disrupted operations
Lucknow – Surgical services at Lokbandhu Hospital, which were halted after a fire broke out in the women’s ward on April 14, are expected to resume fully within a week, officials said.
The fire caused heavy smoke to spread into critical areas, including ICU and several operation theatres (OTs), forcing them to close temporarily. This led to the postponement of over 100 surgeries, severely affecting patient care.
During the interim, only limited surgeries were performed using the emergency OT and the ophthalmology theatre on the first floor. Departments like orthopaedics, general surgery, and ENT couldn’t function properly as their dedicated OTs remained sealed.
Before the fire, the hospital handled 25 to 30 surgeries daily. Post-incident, only 7–8 minor surgeries were possible each day.
Dr. Ajay Shankar Tripathi, Medical Superintendent, stated, “We have resumed minor procedures in the orthopaedics unit. Major surgeries are expected to restart later this week. Patients with prior appointments will be contacted and rescheduled.”
Restoration work in affected OTs is ongoing, with hospital authorities assuring a return to full surgical operations soon.
