NEW DELHI — The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare, led by Rajya Sabha member Ram Gopal Yadav, has submitted a series of critical recommendations to the Union Health Ministry to modernize healthcare education at AIIMS Delhi.

Key Recommendations

  • New Allied Healthcare School: The panel noted that AIIMS Delhi currently lacks a centralized academic center for allied health education despite offering individual paramedical courses in radiology, dental hygiene, and operation theatre technology. It urged the institute to expedite the creation of a dedicated school to bolster workforce development.
  • Strengthening Nursing Excellence: To maintain a highly skilled workforce, the committee proposed specialized certification courses in various clinical nursing branches. It also recommended establishing clinical nursing training laboratories to provide hands-on experience.
  • Affordability and Inclusion: The report highlighted the need for a targeted strategy to make nursing education more accessible. This includes:
    • Providing scholarships and financial aid for disadvantaged groups.
    • Prioritizing the establishment of nursing colleges in underserved rural and tribal areas.
    • Incentivizing private institutions to reserve seats for economically weaker sections (EWS).
  • MBBS Exam Reform: In a significant move for medical students, the panel suggested increasing the maximum attempts to clear the First Professional Exam of MBBS from four to six.

Financial Outlook

The panel welcomed the ₹1,000 crore allocation in the 2026-27 budget intended for upgrading and setting up new Allied and Healthcare Profession (AHP) institutes. However, it cautioned the ministry to develop a phased implementation plan to ensure full fund utilization.
