Kanniyakumari, June 7 — Amid growing footfall from both locals and tourists, the Kanniyakumari Taluk Hospital is facing mounting criticism over severe staff shortages, inadequate infrastructure use, and lax security measures. Local residents and activists have raised alarm over the hospital’s inability to meet emergency and routine healthcare needs, despite its vital location in a busy tourist hub.
Critical Shortage of Doctors, Especially Gynaecologists
Ancilin, a pregnant woman from nearby Kovalam, highlighted the irregular availability of obstetrician-gynecologists. “They’re available only on certain days for a few hours,” she said, stressing the urgent need for a permanent OG specialist. Many expectant mothers in the area are now forced to travel to the Kanniyakumari Government Medical College and Hospital (KKGMCH) in Asaripallam for basic maternal care.
Post-Mortem Services Halted
Local advocate Sivakumar Nagappan noted that the hospital once handled post-mortem procedures but now refers all such cases to KKGMCH due to a complete absence of qualified forensic staff. “All six posts in that department are lying vacant,” he added.
No Doctors After Dark
A key public grievance is the hospital’s lack of medical staff after 6 p.m. “Doctors leave by evening, and the grill gate is shut. Patients must rely on nurses to open it,” said Nagappan. Nurses reportedly cite the lack of security guards and poor lighting as reasons for closing the gates at night.
Tourist Vehicles Add to Chaos
With no security personnel at the hospital entrance, tourist vehicles are often parked inside the premises, posing additional security risks and logistical hassles for patients.
Health Dept. Promises Action
A senior health department official acknowledged the issues, stating that a gynaecologist from Padmanabhapuram hospital currently visits three times a week, but permanent appointment is in progress.
To address the forensic staff shortage, a proposal has been submitted to the government. Moreover, a ₹3.5 crore building project—which includes a maternity operation theatre—is underway to improve infrastructure. The department also plans to deploy security guards and regulate vehicle entry immediately.
