MUMBAI — The Bombay High Court has directed a Solapur sessions court to defer the framing of charges against Manisha Mane-Musale, the prime accused in the high-profile abetment to suicide case of renowned neurologist Dr. Shirish Valsangkar. The order provides temporary legal relief to the 46-year-old former administrative officer until the next formal hearing.

The decision comes shortly after a lower court rejected her discharge plea, maintaining that initial evidence suggested a clear connection between the doctor’s tragic death and alleged threats. The high-stakes case continues to draw widespread attention within the medical and legal communities across Maharashtra.

Background of the Tragic Event

The case traces back to April 18, 2025, when Dr. Shirish Valsangkar, the founder and chief of the S P Institute of Neurosciences, died by suicide at his residence in Solapur. Following the incident, local investigators recovered a suicide note purportedly authored by the veteran medical specialist. The note directly blamed the hospital’s administrative officer, Mane-Musale, for pushing him to the extreme measure.

The Sadar Bazaar police promptly arrested the accused on April 20, 2025, under relevant sections of abetment to suicide. According to police investigative findings, a sharp rift had emerged between the hospital management and the administrative officer over decisions regarding a reduction in her salary and managerial authority.

Allegations of Extortion and Threats

The prosecution alleged that an increasingly disgruntled Mane-Musale had sent volatile emails to Dr. Valsangkar. These electronic communications reportedly contained distressing ultimatums, including threats of self-harm and violence targeted at her own children. In his recovered final note, the senior neurologist explicitly referenced being profoundly distressed by what he characterized as false, obscene, and baseless allegations leveled against him by a staff member he had personally mentored and supported throughout her professional career.

Further police investigations into the hospital’s daily operations revealed deeper layers of dispute. Authorities stated that nearly 27 other hospital staff members had filed official complaints regarding Mane-Musale’s administrative behavior and overreaching control. Subsequent financial audits by investigators also brought up allegations of major financial irregularities, suspicious transactions across multiple bank accounts, and substantial unpaid taxes linked to hospital operations.

Lower Court Refusal and High Court Appeal

The accused was granted bail on June 25, 2025, after spending over two months in custody. Seeking complete exoneration before the trial could formally begin, Mane-Musale filed a discharge application before the Solapur sessions court. However, on April 20, 2026, Principal District and Sessions Judge Manoj Sharma rejected her plea. The judge ruled that the available material on record created a “grave suspicion” and established a strong prima facie link between the threats dispatched by the applicant and the ultimate demise of the physician.

Challenging the sessions court order, Mane-Musale’s legal team approached the High Court. Her defense advocates argued against the immediate initiation of the criminal trial, prompting the High Court to issue the directive to halt the framing of charges till the higher bench comprehensively reviews the legality of the lower court’s rejection. The state was represented by the additional public prosecutor, with local police personnel present to monitor the legal developments. All trial procedures in Solapur will remain frozen until the High Court concludes its next scheduled deliberation on the matter.
