A shocking incident from Pune has triggered widespread outrage after a pregnant woman was allegedly forced to deliver her baby on the roadside due to denial of treatment at a government hospital. The case has now drawn the attention of the National Commission for Women (NCW), which has demanded a detailed investigation.
Pregnant Woman Delivers on Road After Alleged Hospital Refusal
The incident occurred in Shirur, where the woman, in advanced labour, reportedly collapsed on the road after being denied admission at Shirur Rural Hospital. With no immediate medical assistance available, the delivery had to be conducted in the open, assisted by local residents and doctors who rushed to the scene.
Eyewitness visuals circulating on social media showed women forming a protective barrier using dupattas to maintain privacy while the delivery took place under extremely distressing conditions.
Doctors Step In, Save Mother and Newborn
Local gynaecologist Dr. Sunita Pote, whose clinic is located nearby, responded swiftly after learning about the emergency. She was soon joined by Dr. Sanket Ghode, and together they conducted the delivery on the roadside.
According to Dr. Pote, the situation was critical, with the mother being severely anaemic and exhausted. The newborn initially showed no response, but emergency intervention helped revive the baby, who eventually began crying—bringing relief to everyone present.

The doctors have been widely praised online for their timely intervention and dedication. Advocate Yashomati Thakur highlighted the incident on social media platform X, commending the doctors and raising concerns over systemic healthcare failures.
She alleged that the woman had visited the hospital days earlier but was denied treatment due to lack of necessary reports. The advocate also criticized the state administration, urging immediate accountability and action from concerned ministers.
NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognisance, Seeks Report in 7 Days
Taking serious note of the matter, the National Commission for Women has sought an Action Taken Report within seven days. The Commission emphasized that the incident reflects significant gaps in emergency maternal healthcare and institutional delivery systems.
It further stated that every woman has the fundamental right to safe and dignified childbirth, and being forced to deliver in a public space constitutes a violation of her rights to healthcare, privacy, and dignity.
Authorities Directed to Investigate and Fix Accountability
The NCW Chairperson has directed officials, including the District Collector of Pune and the state’s public health department, to conduct a thorough inquiry. The focus will be on identifying lapses, fixing responsibility for negligence, and ensuring proper postnatal care for both mother and child.
The Commission has also called for strengthening maternal healthcare infrastructure to prevent such incidents in the future.
