MALDA – Two separate incidents of violence at healthcare facilities in Malda have raised serious concerns over the safety of medical personnel and the adequacy of hospital security in the district. On May 4, 2026, authorities confirmed that six individuals were arrested for vandalism at Chanchal Super Speciality Hospital, while a separate assault on security staff was reported at the Malda Medical College and Hospital (MMCH).

The Chanchal Hospital Vandalism

The primary incident occurred on Thursday night at Chanchal Super Speciality Hospital following the death of a 34-year-old patient, Ankan Roy. Roy, a resident of Mahanandapur, was admitted with severe chest pain but succumbed to his condition shortly after. His family alleged medical negligence, claiming that despite repeated requests, doctors failed to respond in a timely manner.

Following his death, a mob of relatives and local residents turned violent, storming the hospital premises. Witnesses described a chaotic scene where medical equipment and furniture were damaged, trolleys were thrown, and doctors’ desks were overturned. Medical services were disrupted for several hours as the staff fled for safety.

Police from the Chanchal station, with central force support, controlled the situation and arrested six people based on a complaint from Superintendent Sumit Talukdar. The suspects were remanded by the Chanchal sub-divisional court on Friday.

Assault at Malda Medical College (MMCH)

In a separate incident at Malda Medical College and Hospital (MMCH), security staff reported being assaulted by a group of individuals following a dispute at a gate. A female guard suffered injuries in the altercation, and a police report has been filed, initiating an investigation.
