Targeted attack suspected; doctor belonged to minority Ahmadiyya community
Sargodha : In a shocking incident that appears to be a targeted killing, Dr Sheikh Ahmad Mahmood, a reputed general physician and gastroenterology specialist, was shot dead inside Fatima Hospital on Friday. He was 58.
Gunman Posed as Hospital Visitor, Escaped After Attack
According to police, the assailant disguised himself as a staff member of the “Clean Punjab Program,” entered the hospital, and purchased a check-up slip before waiting for the doctor. As soon as Dr Mahmood exited his office, the attacker opened fire, striking him in the back and abdomen.
Despite being rushed to District Headquarters Teaching Hospital, Dr Mahmood succumbed to his injuries due to extensive internal damage. The shooter fled the scene, and CCTV footage captured moments of panic among hospital staff as they scrambled to get help.
Experienced Physician, Known for Serving the Underprivileged
Dr Mahmood had a distinguished career spanning over three decades, previously serving at institutions like Sadiq Hospital. Most recently, he provided medical services at Fatima Hospital as part of a welfare program. He was also known for offering free treatment to the underprivileged.
He is survived by his mother, wife, two daughters, and two sons.
Police Vow Swift Justice; Religious Bias Suspected
Sargodha DPO Muhammad Sohaib Ashraf, along with senior police officials, visited the scene and initiated an investigation. Authorities have assured that efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrator.
Sources close to the victim revealed that Dr Mahmood had received threats in the past due to his Ahmadiyya faith, which allegedly led him to resign from a previous role. However, his dedication to healthcare and public service eventually brought him back into medical practice.
