Pune : A recreational trek in Himachal Pradesh turned into a heartbreaking tragedy as Dr Nitin Abhivant (42), Head of the Psychiatry Department at BJ Medical College (BJMC) and Sassoon General Hospital (SGH), died after suffering severe breathlessness, suspected to be caused by a heart attack, during a trek in the Buran Ghati region.

Dr Abhivant, a respected academician and an experienced trekker, had embarked on the expedition with college friends on June 7. On June 9, just half an hour into a base-level trek, he reportedly collapsed. Despite being accompanied by two doctor friends who attempted immediate CPR and medical aid, Dr Abhivant could not be revived.

A post-mortem is awaited to confirm the exact cause of death.

‘A Sudden, Unbelievable Loss’

Dr Abhivant’s untimely demise has shocked the medical community. Known for his innovative, ethical, and compassionate approach to psychiatry, he was instrumental in advancing technology-driven mental health care.

“He would trek frequently and was healthy. His passing away has come as a profound shock,” said Dr Bhushan Chaudhari, his college friend and a professor of Psychiatry at Dr D Y Patil Medical College.

“He was empathetic and ethical, and always sought cost-effective mental healthcare solutions,” recalled Dr Praful Kapse, Associate Professor at Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health.

A Scholar, A Leader, A Gentle Soul

Dr Abhivant was known not just for his professional excellence but also for his humble and warm personality. His colleagues describe him as someone who was always smiling, approachable, and deeply committed to teaching.

“It’s a loss for the institute and society,” said BJMC and SGH Dean Dr Eknath Pawar. “He will be remembered for his humility, dedication, and service.”

Family and Legacy

Dr Abhivant is survived by his parents, brother, wife, and an eight-year-old son. A seasoned trekker of the Sahyadri ranges, his passing has left a void in both the medical and mountaineering communities.
