Berhampur, Special Correspondent: District authorities on Sunday sealed a private hospital near the new bus stand in Berhampur following the death of a 30-year-old man from Tumba Sindarbad amid allegations of medical negligence.
Patient’s Medical Journey
The deceased sustained a shoulder fracture in an accident on December 18. Initially treated at Patrapur Community Health Centre, his condition did not improve, prompting a transfer to MKCG Medical College and Hospital (MCH), Berhampur, on December 19.
Surgery Postponed, Private Referral
Doctors at MKCG MCH reportedly recommended surgery after an X-ray examination. Due to a shortage of doctors, the family was told the procedure could be delayed by nearly a week. They were advised to seek treatment at a private hospital, and the attending doctor allegedly provided contact details of Moon Hospital.
Alleged Lapses at Private Hospital
The patient’s surgery was scheduled at Moon Hospital on December 20. The family alleged that no pre-operative tests were conducted to assess vital parameters and medical reports were not shared with them prior to the procedure.
Deteriorating Condition and Death
According to the family, the patient’s condition worsened after receiving anaesthesia. The hospital authorities shifted him back to MKCG MCH’s casualty department, from where he was moved to the ICU. Doctors later declared him dead, with relatives claiming that wrong anaesthesia contributed to the fatal outcome.
Family Protests and Demands
Following the incident, family members staged a sit-in protest outside Moon Hospital through Sunday night, demanding compensation, seizure of CCTV footage, and action against the doctor who referred the patient. The protest drew public attention, with a Berhampur MP delegate among those present.
Hospital Sealed by Authorities
Acting on directions from the district collector, the Berhampur tehsildar sealed the private hospital. All patients admitted to the facility were shifted to MKCG MCH and City Hospital as a precaution.
Inquiry Initiated
Authorities have launched an official inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the patient’s death. The investigation will focus on medical negligence allegations, hospital protocols, and the referral process that led to the private treatment.
