NEW DELHI – The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has officially activated high-level surveillance and monitoring mechanisms in response to a rare hantavirus outbreak reported aboard a luxury cruise ship in the Atlantic. While international health bodies have categorized the current global risk as “low,” the Indian government has initiated a comprehensive review of its public health preparedness to ensure the safety of its citizens, particularly after confirming that two Indian nationals are currently among the crew members on the affected vessel.

Surveillance Activated as Global Case Count Rises

The decision to activate precautionary measures follows a cluster of infections identified on the MV Hondius, a Dutch-flagged expedition ship that departed Argentina in early April 2026. As of May 8, 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported eight probable cases, including six laboratory-confirmed infections and three fatalities.

The Union Health Ministry is coordinating with the NCDC, IDSP, and WHO to monitor the situation, maintaining high vigilance and proactive public health measures.

Status of Indian Nationals

Officials confirmed that two Indian crew members aboard the vessel are currently asymptomatic and under observation, following international protocols for potential isolation.
