Family Alleges Gross Medical Negligence at Beed Hospital; Four-Member Inquiry Committee Formed
A shocking case of alleged medical negligence has surfaced from Maharashtra’s Beed district, where a pregnant woman reportedly carried a dead foetus in her womb for nearly 22 hours before undergoing surgery. The incident has triggered serious concerns over maternal healthcare services and prompted an official investigation by district health authorities.
According to the woman’s family, the incident occurred on April 23 after she visited a hospital in Parli complaining of severe pain and discomfort. In a formal complaint submitted to the Beed district collector, Parli police station, Sub-district Hospital, and the district health officer, the family accused the hospital staff and doctors of “inexcusable negligence and carelessness.”
The woman’s brother-in-law alleged that her medical check-up on April 22 had shown no complications. However, the next day, after she complained of pain, the doctor asked her to come to the hospital immediately.
“She was given saline after admission, but the doctor reportedly came two hours later. Despite the hospital having sonography facilities, she was asked to undergo a scan at a nearby diagnostic centre. After the sonography, the doctor informed us that the baby had died,” he claimed.
The family further alleged that despite the diagnosis, doctors delayed the cesarean surgery for nearly 22 hours, causing immense physical and emotional suffering to the patient.
Husband Alleges Delay Despite Severe Pain
The woman’s husband claimed that the family paid Rs 25,000 before the surgery was finally conducted. He alleged that his wife remained in severe pain throughout the night while the attending doctor allegedly did not visit the hospital.
He has demanded a detailed police investigation, including verification of CCTV footage and call records, to establish whether negligence occurred during the treatment process.
The family also claimed that although they approached the local police station, no FIR or formal case has been registered so far.
Health Department Launches Investigation
Speaking on the matter, Beed District Health Officer Satish Salunke confirmed that authorities have received the complaint and termed the allegations serious.
“We have received the complaint, and these are serious regulations,” he said, adding that a four-member committee has been constituted to investigate the incident. The committee has been directed to submit its findings at the earliest.
Doctor Rejects Negligence Charges
The gynaecologist accused in the case has denied all allegations of negligence. According to the doctor, the medical team initially attempted a normal delivery procedure in line with standard medical protocol.
She claimed that when complications arose and a cesarean section became necessary, the patient’s relatives were initially unwilling to provide consent for the surgery.
“The relatives agreed only after one of their family members, who is also a doctor, examined the patient and understood that a C-section was required,” the doctor reportedly stated.
The doctor further said that the patient arrived at the hospital around 3 p.m. after suffering from vomiting since the morning. She claimed the patient’s blood pressure was stabilised first, IV fluids were administered, and a sonography conducted by a radiologist later confirmed the absence of foetal heartbeat.
Rising Concerns Over Maternal Healthcare
The incident has once again raised questions about maternal healthcare infrastructure, emergency response, and accountability in private and semi-private healthcare facilities in Maharashtra. The outcome of the official probe is now awaited to determine whether medical negligence or procedural lapses occurred in the case.
