Patna: In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves across Bihar’s healthcare community, a 60-year-old General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) staffer from Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) was shot dead in Nalanda district on Saturday, in what appears to be a property-related family dispute.

60-year-old ambushed near farmland; police suspect family feud behind the killing

The incident took place in Doiya village under the jurisdiction of Noorsarai police station, as the nurse was returning from her farmland. She was allegedly ambushed and shot in the head by unidentified assailants — believed to be her own relatives.

The deceased, a widow of the late Sunil Prasad, was employed on evening duty at PMCH and would return to her village each morning. Her son told The Times of India, “I found my mother lying by the roadside. We rushed her to Biharsharif Model Hospital, where she was declared dead.” He accused her cousins of committing the murder due to a long-standing land dispute.

Threats Received a Day Before Murder

According to police, the woman had been receiving death threats from a nephew just a day before the incident. Authorities believe this may be a premeditated act tied to the ongoing family conflict.

Police Investigation Underway

SDPO Sadar-2, Sanjay Kumar Jaiswal, confirmed that police were informed around 10 a.m. and reached the crime scene shortly after. “Preliminary investigation suggests a family feud. A dog squad and forensic team were deployed to collect evidence. We are awaiting a formal complaint from the family to proceed further,” he said.

Noorsarai SHO Rajneesh Kumar added that the body was sent for post-mortem at Biharsharif Model Hospital and later handed over to the family. He said raids are underway to locate Nilesh, a relative suspected of involvement.

Previous Incidents Highlight Rising Violence Against Medical Staff

This case follows a string of violent incidents involving medical professionals in Bihar. Medical Dialogues earlier reported the double murder of a retired NMCH nurse and her daughter outside their home in Patna’s Alamganj area, underlining growing concerns about the safety of healthcare workers, even outside the hospital premises.

As investigations continue, authorities are probing all angles to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further escalation of such land-dispute-related crimes.
