President Droupadi Murmu Confers India’s Third-Highest Civilian Award on Renowned Radiation Oncologist

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to cancer treatment and medical research, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the prestigious Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour, on eminent Indian-American radiation oncologist Dr Dattatreyudu Nori. The award was presented during an investiture ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday.

Dr Nori is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading pioneers in oncology. Over a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, he has significantly advanced cancer diagnosis and treatment, helping improve survival rates through innovative radiation oncology techniques and clinical research.

Pioneer in Oncology and Cancer Research

Dr Nori served as Professor and Chairman of Oncology and Director of the Cancer Centre at the prestigious Cornell Medical Centre in New York. Throughout his career, he has been credited with developing several groundbreaking cancer treatment approaches that have transformed oncology practices across the globe.

His contributions have earned international recognition for improving patient outcomes and advancing modern radiation therapy.

Journey from Andhra Pradesh to Global Recognition

Born on October 18, 1947, in Mantada village of Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district, Dr Nori completed his MBBS from Kurnool Medical College before earning his postgraduate degree from Osmania University in 1976.

He later joined the world-renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in the United States, where he made landmark contributions to cancer research, radiation oncology, and patient care.

Strengthening Cancer Care in India

Despite his international achievements, Dr Nori has maintained strong ties with India and has played a pivotal role in improving the country’s cancer care infrastructure.

He was instrumental in establishing the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute in Hyderabad, where he served as a founding member and Chief Scientific Advisor. He continues to contribute to India’s healthcare sector as Senior Advisor to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center-Chennai and advises the Governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on cancer care initiatives.

Contributions to Global Oncology

Dr Nori has also served as a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), helping formulate cancer treatment strategies and guidelines for developing nations.

A prolific academic, he has authored more than 300 scientific research papers and four books on oncology. He has also mentored over 300 medical professionals who now hold leadership positions in healthcare institutions worldwide.

Recipient of Numerous Prestigious Honours

Before receiving the Padma Bhushan, Dr Nori was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2015. His long list of accolades also includes the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the American Cancer Society’s “Tribute to Life” Award, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s “Most Distinguished Physician Award.”

In 2017, the Indian Cancer Congress presented him with its highest honour, the “Living Legend in Cancer” award, recognising his exceptional contributions to oncology in India and around the world.
