Globally Acclaimed Cardiologist Takes the Helm
Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awardee Dr Tejas Madhusudan Patel, a world-renowned interventional cardiologist, has been appointed as the new President of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jodhpur. Known for pioneering transradial interventions, robotic PCI, and distant telerobotic PCI, Dr Patel has played a key role in revolutionising modern cardiology.
Distinguished Career in Cardiology
Since 2012, Dr Patel has served as Chairman and Chief Interventional Cardiologist at the Apex Heart Institute, Ahmedabad. He previously headed the Cardiology Department at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SVPIMSR) under Gujarat University from 2008 to 2022. His academic appointments include serving as Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at Virginia Commonwealth University, USA, and visiting professor at the Mayo Clinic’s Department of Cardiology.
Innovator and Educator
Dr Patel has trained over 8,000 cardiologists worldwide through TRICO, an international course on transradial techniques, held annually since 2005. He has authored three authoritative books on coronary interventions and designed globally used medical devices, including the PAPA catheter and VASO-catheter. His extensive research contributions include over 330 publications, 24 textbook chapters, and authorship of the “White Paper” on transradial interventions for the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Intervention (SCAI), USA.
Awards and Recognitions
In addition to the Padma Bhushan (2024) and Padma Shri (2015), Dr Patel has been honoured with the Dr B. C. Roy Award, the Dr K. M. Sharan Cardiology Excellence Award, and several international fellowships, including FACC, FESC, FCSI, and FSCAI. His innovations have notably reduced hospital stays for coronary interventions from several days to under 36 hours, significantly improving patient outcomes.
