Doctors slam TN govt for “insulting” pay despite 10-year experience requirement
Thanjavur – A job notification issued by the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Tuberculosis and Chest Disease Hospital, Sengipatti, has triggered sharp criticism from medical professionals across Tamil Nadu. The hospital has invited applications for the post of Medical Officer with a monthly lump sum salary of ₹40,000 — while requiring candidates to have at least 10 years of experience.
Job in TB Ward Demands Experience, Offers Little Pay
The position, which is in the tuberculosis (TB) ward, is open to MBBS graduates, with preference for those having specialized training in TB medicine. The hospital has also invited applications from retired government medical officers.
Medical professionals and health activists have condemned the offer, calling the salary “insultingly low” for the level of expertise and workload expected.
Doctors and Activists Slam the Government
Dr Hussain, a health activist, posted the job notification on social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), writing:
“Dear TN government, have some shame. Minimum 10 years of experience for ₹40,000? In the TB ward? Dear TN doctors, have some dignity, unite together, stop your fights between yourself and stop this madness.”
The ad has reignited concerns about poor compensation in government health facilities. In Tamil Nadu, Medical Officers typically earn ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 per month depending on their role and institution. The offered pay has been labeled “exploitative” by many in the medical community.
Application Deadline April 25
According to the official press release dated April 11, applications are to be submitted to the District Collector and Managing Committee Chairman of the hospital by April 25, 2025.
The controversy comes amidst broader conversations about the treatment of healthcare workers in government-run hospitals and a call for better recognition of their services.
