Safety lapses exposed in Cuttack ICU tragedy as opposition demands Health Minister’s resignation

Cuttack: Days after a devastating fire at SCB Medical College and Hospital claimed 12 lives, the Government of Odisha has suspended four officers, tightening action over serious safety lapses. The incident has triggered a major political controversy, with opposition parties demanding the resignation of Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling.

Fire Breaks Out in ICU, Patients Trapped Asleep

The fire reportedly broke out around 2:30 am in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where 23 critically ill patients were admitted across two rooms. Most victims were asleep at the time, leaving little opportunity to escape the rapidly spreading blaze.

Probe Reveals Major Safety Failures

Preliminary investigations have uncovered alarming lapses in fire safety systems. Officials found that the hospital’s sprinkler system failed to activate because its control valve had been left closed. Additionally, the fire alarm system had reportedly been switched off for several days.

Initial findings also suggest that the fire originated from two ventilator machines inside the ICU, further raising concerns over equipment maintenance and monitoring.

Four Officers Suspended After Inquiry

Acting on the findings of a fact-finding team led by the development commissioner, the state government suspended four officials, including fire department personnel and an engineering officer linked to the hospital’s electrical division. The move signals increasing accountability in the wake of the tragedy.

Assembly Disrupted Amid Political Showdown

The issue sparked intense scenes in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, where members of the Biju Janata Dal disrupted proceedings during Question Hour, demanding immediate action and accountability.

BJD MLA Arun Sahoo accused the government of a “complete collapse” of the healthcare system, using strong remarks to criticize its functioning.

BJP Rejects Allegations, Orders Judicial Probe

Leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party dismissed the opposition’s claims, calling them an attempt to politicise a tragic incident. BJP MLA Manas Dutta stated that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has already ordered a judicial inquiry and that the Health Minister has addressed the Assembly.

Opposition Demands Minister’s Resignation

Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik, after visiting the hospital, termed the incident a sign of “crumbling safety standards” and demanded the resignation of the Health Minister.

Congress leader Ramachandra Kadam also echoed the demand, stressing that condolences alone are not enough and that accountability must be ensured.

Rising Concerns Over Hospital Safety in India

The tragic incident has once again highlighted persistent concerns over fire safety compliance in hospitals across India. Experts say stricter enforcement of safety protocols and regular audits are critical to prevent such disasters in the future.
