Bhubaneswar: In the wake of a deadly fire incident at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling has directed officials to enforce stringent fire safety measures across all hospitals in the state.
During a high-level review meeting held at Lok Seva Bhawan, the minister emphasized the need for periodic monitoring and strict compliance with fire safety norms in government healthcare facilities.
Focus on Fire Safety Compliance Across Hospitals
The meeting reviewed existing fire safety arrangements in medical colleges, district headquarters hospitals, and other healthcare centers across Odisha. Mahaling instructed officials to conduct regular inspections and ensure that all fire-fighting equipment remains fully functional at all times.
He also stressed the importance of conducting mock drills to improve emergency preparedness and response capabilities.
Patient Safety a Top Priority
Highlighting the seriousness of the issue, the minister stated that patient safety must remain the top priority for the state government. He warned that any negligence in maintaining safety standards would not be tolerated.
Officials were further advised to stay vigilant and proactively address potential fire hazards in hospital premises.
Coordination with Departments
Mahaling directed health officials to work closely with the Works Department and the Fire Services Department to strengthen fire safety infrastructure and ensure seamless emergency response mechanisms.
Political Heat After Cuttack Fire Incident
The directive comes amid rising political pressure following the recent fire mishap at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, which reportedly claimed 12 lives. Opposition parties, including the Biju Janata Dal and the Indian National Congress, have demanded the minister’s resignation, citing alleged lapses in the state’s healthcare system.
They have also raised concerns over systemic shortcomings in hospital safety management, intensifying scrutiny on the state health department.
Government Reaffirms Commitment
Reiterating the government’s stance, Mukesh Mahaling assured that strict action would be taken against any violations of safety protocols. He called on officials to remain alert and committed to preventing such tragic incidents in the future.
The state government is expected to ramp up monitoring efforts and strengthen safety compliance mechanisms across healthcare facilities in the coming weeks.
