The Odisha government has approved a significant salary increase for contractual teaching staff in Ayurvedic and Homoeopathic medical colleges, aiming to strengthen the state’s AYUSH education system and improve faculty retention.
Revised Pay Structure for Lecturers, Readers, and Professors
Under the new pay structure approved by the Health and Family Welfare Department, lecturers will now receive ₹70,000 per month. Readers will see their salaries rise sharply to ₹80,000 from ₹40,000, while professors’ remuneration has been doubled from ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 per month.
This revision is expected to directly benefit contractual faculty members working in government-run Ayurvedic and Homoeopathic institutions across the state.
Approval Backed by Finance Department
The proposal has also received clearance from the Finance Department, indicating a coordinated push by the government to enhance teaching standards and ensure competitive compensation in the AYUSH sector.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi personally approved the decision, reinforcing the administration’s focus on improving the welfare of educators and strengthening healthcare education infrastructure. Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling also welcomed the move, stating that it will significantly uplift academic quality in these institutions.
Move Expected to Boost Research and Academic Excellence
According to officials, better salaries and improved working conditions are likely to motivate faculty members to actively participate in research, innovation, and advanced training programs. This, in turn, is expected to elevate the overall standard of education in Ayurvedic and Homoeopathic colleges.
Decision Comes After Protests by AYUSH Practitioners
The salary hike follows protests by AYUSH practitioners in Bhubaneswar in December last year. During the demonstrations, doctors and teaching staff raised concerns over job insecurity, lack of regularisation, and low pay.
They had argued that these issues were negatively impacting morale, productivity, and the quality of healthcare services.
