Govt Implements Robust Medical, Sanitation, and Safety Measures Amid Expected Surge of Devotees
Bhubaneswar:
In anticipation of the massive influx of devotees for the upcoming Rath Yatra in Puri, the Odisha government has rolled out an extensive healthcare plan to ensure public safety and swift medical response. Speaking to reporters, Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling announced the deployment of 378 doctors and paramedical staff, and the preparation of 265 hospital beds, including ICU and emergency care facilities.
The measures come amid concerns of crowd-related incidents and seasonal health issues, including diarrhoea outbreaks. The Puri District Headquarters Hospital has set aside 68 beds, including 10 ICU beds and 8 burn unit beds, to manage critical cases.
First-Time AIIMS Bhubaneswar Support, Heat Stroke Centres, and Blood Stock Readied
For the first time, a team of specialist doctors from AIIMS Bhubaneswar will be stationed at medical centres in Puri to provide advanced clinical support. Additionally, a dedicated 10-bed air-conditioned heat stroke centre has been established at Talabania to address weather-induced health issues.
To further strengthen emergency response:
- 74 ambulances (including 108 emergency ambulances) will be stationed strategically
- 69 first-aid centres will be functional across Puri town
- 200 units of blood have been stocked
- Two minor operation theatres and dedicated dressing rooms have been set up for trauma and surgical needs
Food and Water Safety Under Tight Watch
With the recent diarrhoea scare in mind, the government has deployed eight food safety officers and three mobile surveillance teams to monitor the quality of food and drinking water being supplied during the festival. Vendors will be strictly monitored to prevent the sale of stale or contaminated food.
“Rigorous health monitoring and disease prevention protocols are in place to maintain public health standards,” stated an official health department release. NGO volunteers will also assist medical teams along designated ambulance corridors.
Minister Mahaling expressed optimism, saying,
“With the blessings of Lord Jagannath, we hope the Rath Yatra will be conducted smoothly and safely.”
