Lucknow |
In a deeply disturbing incident from Pachpedwa, Balrampur district (Uttar Pradesh), a male nursing staffer has been arrested for the alleged rape of a sedated woman patient inside the ICU of a private hospital.
According to police, the assault took place in the early hours of July 25. The survivor, a local resident, had been admitted to the ICU a day earlier after complaining of chest pain. During the night shift, the accused — a nursing staff member from Madhyanagar, Bhaisahw — was on duty along with a female trainee nurse.
At around 2 a.m., the accused instructed all patient attendants to vacate the ICU, after which the trainee nurse moved to the general ward to rest. Left alone with the patient, the accused allegedly administered a sedative to her at around 4 a.m. before sexually assaulting her.
CCTV footage installed outside the privacy curtain reportedly captured the series of events. The survivor regained consciousness mid-assault and raised an alarm, prompting the accused to flee the hospital.
Police launched a manhunt and arrested the accused within 48 hours near Bhathar bridge, acting on a tip-off. Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar confirmed the arrest, stating that the police had gathered sufficient evidence, and further investigation is ongoing.
A case has been registered under Sections 64(2)(e) and 123 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Preliminary reports indicate the accused had no prior criminal record, though authorities are continuing to collect additional evidence.
This case has sparked fresh outrage over patient safety and hospital accountability, especially in critical care units where vulnerable patients depend entirely on medical staff.
