Kathmandu: The Nepal Medical Council (NMC) has issued a notice seeking clarifications from two senior doctors in the Department of Psychiatry at Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (Dhulikhel Hospital) after a first-year MD student attempted suicide on February 16.

Who Is Under Investigation?

The NMC’s Professional Conduct Committee has asked:
🔹 Dr. Ajay Risal
🔹 Dr. Deepak Kunwar

Both doctors, who head the Psychiatry Department, are being questioned for alleged abuse and undue pressure on the student.

What Led to This Action?

  • The NMC had earlier recorded statements from the accused doctors and the survivor.
  • However, further clarification is required to determine their role in the incident.
  • Four doctors from the department were previously suspended for a week as part of the investigation.

Hospital’s Response

Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences has:
Directed the accused doctors to step away from official duties until the investigation is complete.
Faced demands from resident doctors for an impartial probe, citing similar past incidents:

  • A student attempted suicide last year.
  • Another student dropped out due to alleged harassment.

The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding mental health issues, student well-being, and academic pressure in Nepal’s medical institutions.
