Report proposes Global Ayurveda Register, export-focused pharmacopoeia, world federation and trade dashboard to boost global acceptance of Ayurveda
The NITI Aayog has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap aimed at positioning Ayurveda as a globally recognised healthcare system, recommending the establishment of a Global Ayurveda Register (GAR), a World Federation for Ayurveda and Yoga, an export-oriented Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia, and a real-time trade dashboard to strengthen India’s traditional medicine ecosystem.
The recommendations have been outlined in the report titled ‘Strategic Roadmap for Making Ayurveda Global’, released on July 2, 2026. Prepared by the Health Division of NITI Aayog in collaboration with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the report proposes measures to enhance the global acceptance of Ayurveda by improving market access, strengthening regulatory frameworks and expanding international recognition of India’s traditional healthcare system.
Roadmap Aims to Expand Global Presence of Ayurveda
According to the report, India possesses a well-developed Ayurveda ecosystem with more than 3.55 lakh trained practitioners, although nearly 95% of them currently practice within the country.
The report notes that Ayurvedic products are exported to nearly 150 countries, with exports increasing from USD 1.09 billion in 2014 to USD 2.16 billion in 2023. It also identifies significant growth opportunities in wellness services, Ayurvedic healthcare products and medical value travel.
Key Recommendations of the Report
The roadmap proposes several strategic initiatives to accelerate the international expansion of Ayurveda, including:
- Establishment of a Global Ayurveda Register (GAR) to create an internationally recognised database of qualified Ayurveda practitioners.
- Formation of a World Federation for Ayurveda and Yoga to promote global collaboration and professional standards.
- Development of an export-focused Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia aligned with international regulatory requirements.
- Creation of a real-time trade dashboard to monitor exports, identify emerging markets and support evidence-based policy decisions.
- Strengthening regulatory frameworks to improve global market access and international acceptance of Ayurvedic products and services.
