89 Medical Colleges Across 20 States Get Nod; DM Cardiology Tops the List

New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 540 additional postgraduate Super-Specialty seats in 89 medical colleges across the country for the academic year 2025-26. The approvals include both new courses and increased intake in existing programmes.

Speciality-wise, DM Cardiology received the highest number of approvals with 64 seats. This was followed by M.Ch Urology (48 seats), M.Ch Surgical Oncology (40 seats), and M.Ch Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (39 seats), reflecting a strong push towards strengthening advanced surgical and cardiac care services.

Other major approvals include DM Nephrology (39 seats), DM Critical Care Medicine (34 seats), M.Ch Neurosurgery (31 seats), DM Neurology (25 seats), and M.Ch Paediatric Surgery (25 seats). Seats were also granted in DM Neonatology (24), DM Medical Gastroenterology (20), and M.Ch Surgical Gastroenterology (18), among several other super-specialties.

Additional approvals span DM Clinical Immunology & Rheumatology (16), DM Cardiac Anaesthesia (14), DM Medical Oncology (14), and DM Interventional Radiology (12). Smaller but significant increases were seen in DM Endocrinology, DM Neuro Anaesthesia, DM Onco Pathology (8 seats each), and DM Pulmonary Medicine (7 seats).

The expansion also covers niche super-specialties such as DM Medical Genetics (5 seats), M.Ch Vascular Surgery (5 seats), DM Clinical Haematology (4 seats), DM Paediatric and Neonatal Anaesthesia (4 seats), DM Pediatric Cardiology (4 seats), and M.Ch Head and Neck Surgery (4 seats). Seats were also approved in DM Paediatric Nephrology, DM Pediatric Gastroenterology, DM Hepatology, DM Geriatric Mental Health, and M.Ch Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery.

The newly sanctioned seats are distributed across institutions in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Both government and private medical colleges have benefited from the expansion.

Prominent institutions receiving approvals include Christian Medical College, King George’s Medical University, Maulana Azad Medical College, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Osmania Medical College and Seth GS Medical College, among several others across the country.

The approvals were notified through a public notice issued by Dr M.K. Ramesh, President of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB). The notice stated that the list of newly sanctioned or increased Super-Specialty seats shall be treated as deemed Letters of Permission (LoPs) for counselling purposes, while individual LoPs are being issued. Stakeholders have been given seven working days to report any discrepancies in the notified list.
