Over 130 Doctor Posts Vacant Amid Growing Patient Load

Jamshedpur’s MGM Hospital, the largest government medical facility in the Kolhan region, is grappling with a critical shortage of medical professionals. With 131 out of 309 sanctioned posts for doctors vacant, the hospital’s ability to provide quality care is severely compromised.

Impact Worsens with Hospital’s Expansion

The recent relocation of the hospital to a new 750-bed facility has exacerbated the crisis. The available 178 doctors are struggling to meet the demands of the expanded infrastructure, leaving patients with limited access to timely and adequate care.

Medical College Wing Faces Faculty Deficit

The shortage is particularly dire in the hospital’s medical college wing.

  • Professors: Only 24 of the sanctioned 34 positions are filled.
  • Associate Professors: 10 are currently serving, whereas 40 are required.
  • Five departments lack any professors altogether, creating critical gaps in education and patient care.

Dual Burden on Faculty

Faculty members are stretched thin as they balance teaching responsibilities with patient care. “Every department is understaffed, and the dual role is overburdening the doctors,” said Dr. Nakul Chaudhary, Deputy Superintendent.

Efforts to Address the Crisis

The hospital administration has raised the issue with higher authorities, urging swift action to fill the vacancies. In the meantime, MGM has requested the recruitment of external doctors to mitigate the impact on patients.

The Way Forward

The shortage highlights the urgent need for recruitment and policy interventions to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Jharkhand. Without immediate action, the strain on the hospital could jeopardize both patient care and medical education quality.
