Surgeon Injured in Unexpected OT Incident

Berhampore: In a shocking incident, a mentally unstable patient attacked a doctor during surgery at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital on Friday night.

While lying on the operation table, the patient suddenly grabbed a pair of scissors and struck the surgeon, causing minor injuries. The doctor, who received a stitch on his hand, is now in stable condition. Following the attack, the hospital administration lodged a case at Berhampore Police Station.

Family Dispute Leads to Hospitalization

The patient, identified as Bapan Halder from Hogla Deyer village under Jalangi Police Station, was admitted in critical condition after an altercation with his father earlier that day. Reportedly, Bapan, who has been undergoing treatment for mental health issues, attempted to attack his father with a sickle. In the struggle, he sustained a throat injury and was rushed to the hospital for surgery.

Security Stepped In to Contain the Situation

Following the attack on the doctor, security personnel intervened and restrained Bapan to complete the procedure. The tense situation was soon brought under control, and police later arrived at the scene.

Dr. Amit Kumar Daan, principal of the medical college, stated, “Bapan was undergoing treatment for mental health issues, but his medication was irregular. Despite his condition, every injured patient is treated here. Unfortunately, he attacked the doctor, but the situation is now under control, and the doctor is stable.”

The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
