Viral Video from Uttar Pradesh Sparks Public Outrage and Institutional Action
Lucknow:
A deeply disturbing video from Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College, Meerut, has gone viral, igniting public anger and raising serious questions about patient care in government hospitals. The footage shows a junior resident doctor from the orthopaedics department asleep on duty, while a critically injured accident victim lay bleeding and unattended, eventually succumbing to his injuries.
Desperate Pleas Ignored as Doctor Slept
According to reports, the incident took place around 1 a.m. on Monday, when a man from Hasanpur Kala village was brought to the hospital’s emergency ward after being hit by an unidentified vehicle. Despite his critical condition and heavy bleeding, the on-duty junior doctor — later identified as Dr. Bhupesh Kumar Rai — was seen asleep in a chair with his leg propped up, directly facing the patient.
In the viral video, family members and other attendants can be seen frantically attempting to wake the doctor. A woman holding a child is visibly distressed as she tries to rouse him, but to no avail. Eyewitnesses claim they pleaded with hospital staff for assistance, but no timely intervention came, and the patient died shortly after due to lack of medical attention.
Immediate Suspension, Probe Ordered
Taking swift action, the medical college administration suspended Dr. Rai and another doctor associated with the case. A three-member inquiry committee has been constituted to probe the serious allegations made by the victim’s family.
“Taking cognisance of the video, Dr. Bhupesh Kumar Rai was suspended immediately. A committee has been set up to investigate the family’s allegations thoroughly,” said Dr. RC Gupta, Principal of LLRM Medical College, in a statement to TOI.
Confrontation Over Video Recording Inside Emergency Ward
A second video from the hospital has also surfaced, in which a staff member attempts to stop the attendants from filming. The family, however, defends the recording, asking why no emergency treatment was provided despite repeated appeals. The hospital staff member reportedly argued about the filming instead of assisting the patient.
Protests and Outrage from Victim’s Family and Villagers
Following the tragic death, villagers and family members protested at the hospital, demanding accountability and justice.
“We kept pleading with the doctors that he was bleeding heavily. They ignored us until it was too late,” said the victim’s father.
Another relative told Hindustan Times,
“We tried to wake him up, but instead of helping, the staff argued. When they finally responded, they still didn’t treat him properly. No one even examined his wounds.”
Recurring Concerns Over Public Healthcare Standards
This latest tragedy has once again brought the state of emergency medical services in public hospitals under scrutiny. Medical negligence, unresponsive staff, and a lack of accountability have led to similar incidents in the past, many of which were swept under the rug.
Public health experts and patient rights advocates are demanding systemic reforms, including night-shift monitoring, accountability mechanisms, and better emergency ward staffing protocols.
