Nurse Suspended, MP Health Minister Orders Detailed Probe into BMC Patient Death

A case of alleged medical negligence has surfaced at Bundelkhand Medical College (BMC), Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, after a patient died following the alleged premature administration of a high-risk anaesthesia drug before a scheduled surgical procedure. The incident has prompted the suspension of a staff nurse and a comprehensive inquiry ordered by the Madhya Pradesh Government.

According to preliminary findings, the patient had been admitted to the ENT Department after developing a throat lump and was scheduled to undergo a biopsy on June 13. On June 12, the patient’s family was reportedly asked to arrange Atracurium Besylate, a muscle relaxant commonly used during surgery under controlled operating theatre conditions.

High-Risk Anaesthesia Drug Allegedly Administered Before Surgery

The patient’s family alleged that the muscle relaxant was administered through an intravenous (IV) line before the patient was taken to the operation theatre. Within minutes of receiving the injection, the patient reportedly experienced severe breathing difficulties and suffered a cardiac arrest.

Doctors immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which continued for nearly 45 minutes, before placing the patient on ventilator support. Although his condition temporarily stabilised, he succumbed during treatment on June 23, 2026.

Family Alleges Serious Lapse in Patient Care

Following the patient’s death, his wife lodged a complaint at Gopalganj Police Station, demanding strict action against those responsible.

She further alleged that the nurse was using a mobile phone and Bluetooth earphones while administering the injection, claiming that distraction during the procedure resulted in a critical lapse in patient care.

Nurse Suspended Pending Detailed Investigation

Based on the family’s complaint and the preliminary inquiry, Bundelkhand Medical College has suspended the accused nurse pending a detailed investigation.

College Media In-charge Dr Vishal Bhadkariya stated that a post-mortem examination has been conducted and parallel investigations are being carried out by both the police and the college administration. Appropriate disciplinary and legal action will be initiated after the final inquiry report is submitted.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla has directed officials to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident and ensure strict action against anyone found guilty.

Experts Highlight Need for Stronger Safety Protocols

Medical experts believe the incident may indicate broader systemic shortcomings rather than an isolated human error.

An anaesthesia specialist from Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, emphasised that nurses should never administer any medication if there is even the slightest uncertainty regarding its indication or timing. Experts stressed adherence to the internationally recognised “Stop and Ask” patient safety principle, under which healthcare professionals must verify any doubtful medication with the treating doctor or senior nursing staff before administration.

They also pointed to possible deficiencies in hospital protocols, including inadequate supervision, insufficient staff training, weak drug verification mechanisms, lack of double-check systems, and poor implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for handling high-risk medications.

Investigation Continues

The police investigation, institutional inquiry, and post-mortem findings are expected to determine whether the patient’s death resulted from individual negligence, procedural lapses, or systemic failures within the hospital. The final inquiry report will determine further disciplinary and legal action against those found responsible.
