Succeeds Maj Gen Lissamma PV After Four Decades of Distinguished Service
New Delhi: In a significant leadership transition within the Armed Forces Medical Services, Major General Rachel Thomas has assumed charge as the Additional Director General of the Military Nursing Service (MNS), succeeding Major General Lissamma PV, who retired after completing four decades of dedicated service in the Military Nursing Service.
An accomplished nursing officer and alumna of the College of Nursing at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, Maj Gen Rachel Thomas was commissioned into the Military Nursing Service on June 1, 1988. Her appointment marks another milestone in a career spanning nearly 38 years of distinguished military healthcare service.
Extensive Experience Across Military Hospitals and Operational Areas
Throughout her illustrious career, Maj Gen Rachel Thomas has held several key clinical and administrative positions across Military Hospitals under the Armed Forces Medical Services. Her vast experience includes service in premier military healthcare institutions as well as border hospitals operating under the Northern and Eastern Commands.
According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), she has made significant contributions to patient care, nursing administration, and healthcare delivery across diverse operational environments, strengthening military medical services in both peace and field conditions.

Droupadi Murmu presented the National Florence Nightingale Awards 2026 to 15 outstanding nursing professionals during a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Shri Prataprao Jadhav were also present at the ceremony.
