Ludhiana: The Ludhiana Civil Hospital, the largest urban healthcare center in the district, is now functioning without any regular physician after the only medicine specialist, Dr. Amanpreet, was promoted as the district family planning officer. With her departure, all three sanctioned physician posts remain vacant.
Shortage Affects Patient Care
Dr. Amanpreet handled an OPD of 250-300 patients daily and was responsible for male and female wards and emergency care. To manage the shortage, the hospital is deputing physicians from Machhiwara and Khanna sub-divisional hospitals.
Recruitment Plans Underway
A senior health official, on the condition of anonymity, stated that the health department is in the process of hiring specialists, with around 20 new physicians expected to be posted in Ludhiana soon.
Persistent Staff Shortage
The district has 23 sanctioned physician posts, but only three were occupied until now—leaving just two physicians for government hospitals across Ludhiana. Last November, 17 medical officers were allocated to the district, but only 11 joined the service.
The ongoing shortage highlights the urgent need for recruitment to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services at the civil hospital.
